School Mates Project at Brumby Elementary School

School Mates is a project with Brumby Elementary School which has been sustained by East Cobb Rotary for fourteen years. Brumby is a Title I school with a large population of ESOL students (26%), a high transiency rate (40%), and a large number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch (80%). Project components include: 1) BOOKS FOR STUDENTS signed with an encouraging note by the program speaker at each week's club meeting, 2) TUTORING by club members who meet with a student once a week, 3) READ ALL DAY when club members read books aloud in a classroom for 30 to 60 minutes on Read Across America Day which is close to Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd, 4) ANNUAL CURRICULUM CONTRIBUTION - Provided funding through a District 6900 Grant plus some East Cobb Rotary funds to acquire a one-year subscription to Education City's Learn English program for Kindergarten through 5th grade students. This program supports educators and tutors in helping students build English language skills for mastering required learning standards and advancing digital literacy. Thirty-eight (38) club members met one-on-one with students in the school's computer lab to guide them in using the Education City resource on December 16, 2015., 5) CAREER DAY - Club members provide presentations in classrooms about their career for the school's annual Career Day.

In addition, one club member serves as a member of Brumby's School Council and its Foundation Board.

East Cobb Rotary believes in investing in these "at hope" students.
