This Week's Speaker
Marion Bunch, Founder Emeritus, Rotarians For Family Health & AIDS Prevention, Inc.

Join us this week at Le Meridien to welcome our own Marion Bunch, who has played an amazing role in the fight for AIDS prevention and family health around the world. You may also join via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89796844807

Marion joined the Rotary Club of Dunwoody in 1991. She brings a personal and passionate perspective to the battle on AIDS because of the loss of her son to this disease in 1994. Marion started her work in 1997 by developing an AIDS awareness program implemented in Georgia schools that reached over 500,000 students in 15 years. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody was right there with Marion, bringing the program to the DeKalb County schools and serving in leadership roles at the District level for implementing the program across the State.

In 2004, the Rotary International Board of Directors approved Marion's application to create an independent Rotary Action Group now known as Rotarians for Family Health & AIDS Prevention. And in 2011, she worked with Rotary leader Stephen Mwanje in Uganda to create Rotary Family Health Days, a massive disease prevention campaign that provides lifesaving immunizations and health screens across seven African nations and parts of India - an initiative that has served nearly 3 million people and involved more than 5,000 Rotarians. Several of our members have been part of the RFHA board over the years.

Come Friday to learn more about Marion's achievements and the work being done around the world. [read more]

Service Opportunity
Be Part of Dunwoody Rotary History ... Bounds Gardens, Saturday at 9 AM

The photo features the inaugural visit to what we now fondly call Bounds Gardens - previously Monroe Park, and in this photo the start of DeKalb Count's Adopt-A-Spot program - a community service project that began June 8, 2002. We didn't have a better version of this picture - shared with us recently by Monroe Brock - but it includes (from the left): Joel Alvarado, Keep DeKalb Beautiful Director; DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones, Club President Jennie Stipick and her children, George and Vicki; and club members Henry Anthony, Suzanne Muccino, Bill Herald and Monroe Brock, chair for the club's environmental service project.

Be part of history on Saturday, January 28, when Ranger Fred leads the charge for keeping Bounds Garden beautiful. It's almost 21 years since we started - which is just over half of our life as the Rotary Club of Dunwoody. Bounds Garden is the traffic island located across from the Dunwoody Library.

GRSP Weekend Update
Calling for 15-20 Added Volunteers for GRSP Leadership Weekend - Feb 10-12

On February 10, we're expecting the 40 students of the GRSP Class of 2022-23 to join us for a weekend filled with fun, fellowship and learning. This weekend has become a Dunwoody tradition - offering opportunities to meet students from different parts of the world and spend time having fun with fellow Rotarians. It started about 20 years ago under the leadership of Fred and Kathy Brandt, and continued with leaders like Lorri Christopher, Harvey Rosensweig, Mike Parks, Scott Jennings, Louise and Ron Barden, and now Jackie Cuthbert. For most of those years, almost every club member playing some part in the weekend activities. The students have consistently rated our weekend at the top of their list! And we need an added 15-20 people to help!

There are many opportunities for you to be involved this year:

  • as a host family - providing transportation to and from our venue and "bed and breakfast" for one or two GRSP students ... from Friday night pick-up to Sunday morning drop-off ... we need 5 volunteer host families to help us out
  • as part of our Rise Against Hunger Service project on Friday afternoon/evening, where we will pack 10,000 meals to be distributed to people in need around the world. We need 5-6 people to help set-up Friday afternoon, work through the two-hour event, and help with clean-up after
  • as part of the "food team" - helping keep snacks replenished from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning (in shifts as you have time) and setting up/putting away lunch on Saturday
  • as part of the set-up or clean-up team - starting early Friday afternoon, ending between 1:30 and 2 pm on Sunday).

Contact Jackie Cuthbert directly to sign up to help - at 770-597-1183 or cuthbert@mindspring.com
